Why Gentle River Healing

Once upon a time, I worked in a program with an amazing group of young women. Within this program, those around you give you a "trail name" once they feel they know you deeply. "Gentle River" was the name I was given: "Gentle" for my caring and understanding nature, and "River" because even when it looks calm, there is a current that keeps things moving forward.

This is a balance I work to hold in each setting in which I work. Engaging with people is my passion and I have been fortunate to work with them in a variety of settings: schools (from elementary to graduate school), juvenile detention, in-home settings, wilderness therapy, residential treatment, crisis units, and more. With my abundance of experience, I have learned how to be a support and guide through a great variety of different storms.

My Approach

I know that each person is different, and each day is different. I am client-centered and will meet you where you are. Together we will explore what is happening in your life, helping us gain a deeper understanding of what you are experiencing in mind and body. At the same time, we will look at what our goals are and what you'd like to gain from this. Maybe you need new coping skills, time management, boundaries, etc. Maybe you just need time to vent and be heard. Together we will create plans to help you reach your goals, meet your needs, and do it all in a way that restores self-compassion in the place of self-doubt. The journey to healing and reconnecting can be scary and challenging: you will not have to do it alone.

I believe everyone deserves the chance to be heard without assumptions or labels. One of the challenges in mental health treatment (and what the insurance companies may not explain to you) is that using insurance requires that you are given an official "diagnosis" from the DSM-5. For many of us, there are times where we are anxious or sad or suffering from past trauma, and I believe that you don't need someone else's label to justify getting support. For this reason, I suggest using private pay (I can provide super bills) and I offer a sliding scale. I now support Cigna, Aetna, HMSA and BCBS of HI.
